As they continue to build towards the release of What We Fear The Most at the end of April, Liverpool self-proclaimed alternative groove rockers Attic Theory prepare for the release of another of the eleven tracks that will feature on the album – fourth single, Violent Delight.
Violent Delight is an high-tempo rocker that examines the themes of confrontation and deceit. Opening with chugging riffs and a short fiery guitar solo, the track quickly explodes into life. From the outset, there is a taut, irresistible rhythm from bassist Kenny McArthur as vocalist Lewis Wright begins his tale of devilish satisfaction. Unamused, it's dulling the sense / Lick your wounds, on the defensive / Stand accused, rabid and reckless / Right on cue, quit acting demented. The person being addressed is depicted as wild, out of control and there is a call for them to stop acting irrationally, implying their behaviour is deliberate, rather than through a loss of control.
During the chorus, as the band step up the intensity with angry but purposeful drumming, Wright revels in macabre joy as he enjoys the emotional numbness his opponent is suffering, celebrating victory after exposing someone who has caused him pain through their repeated deception and dishonesty. Wright is a gifted vocalist and perfectly suited to the style and nuances of Attic Theory’s music. He is capable of beguiling melodic inflexions but also delivers his lyrics with vivacious ardency when needed. Caught in a lie, watch you deny / You’re lying again! / Proven me right, fuelled by / Violent delight. Wright’s cries of You’re lying again and Violent delight in the final chorus are injected with unrestrained venomous fury and stray into vocals associated with much heavier music.
Further evidence of Wright’s triumphant emergence from desperation and vulnerability surfaces in the second verse. Strain the leash, cornered and helpless / Cage the beast, almost defenceless / What lies beneath, tortured, and tormented / Gritted teeth, the illusions deceptive. Based in deep-seated anguish, the lyrics discuss the beast that our protagonist has been waiting to justifiably unleash. A surging and defiant guitar solo soars above the rest of the band as we approach the final chorus and Attic Theory unfurl their final sprint towards the song’s denouement.
Helmed by producer Loïc Gaillard (Revival Black and Ashen Reach), Violent Delight is a potently irresistible slice of hard rock. Attic Theory know exactly how to draw listeners in and having three guitarists in the band (Peter Donnelly, Tim Cunningham and Matt Lawler) means that Violent Delight is far from the deceptively simple straight ahead, catchy hard rock song it may initially appear to be. Multiple listens reveal the depth and balance of texture, clever melodic phrasing and vigour that it truly contains. Violent Delight will be the opening track on their upcoming album, What We Fear The Most and without doubt, it will set the scene for a collection which is sure to appeal to fans across a range of rock genres.
Violent Delight is released on 8th March 2024. Watch the lyric video below.
